Cameras

Surveillance cameras are available in many different form factors with different features but generally only two types of transmission mediums - Analog or Digital. While analog cameras may sound like something from the distant past, they're still widely used and even offer some benefits over digital. Let's go over the basics of both systems:

HD Analog Cameras:

  • Transmission: Use coaxial cables for video transmission.
  • Resolution: Offer high-definition video quality, systems all the way to 4K (8 MP) are available but 1080P is most common.
  • Installation: Easier to install, especially in existing analog systems.
  • Latency: Generally have lower latency because they transmit video directly without compression.
  • Cost: More affordable, making them ideal for budget-conscious projects.
  • Scalability: Less flexible in terms of scalability and integration with advanced features.
  • Distance: Greatly exceeds Ethernet cabling distances without the need for repeaters or switches.

    IP Digital Cameras:
  • Transmission: Use network cables (Ethernet) and transmit video over IP networks.
  • Resolution: Can provide higher resolutions and offer better image quality.
  • Installation: Can be more complex and costly to install, requiring network infrastructure.
  • Features: Support advanced features like remote access, intelligent analytics, and easy integration with other IP-based systems.
  • Scalability: Highly scalable and flexible, suitable for larger and more complex surveillance systems.
  • Power: Often powered through PoE (Power over Ethernet), simplifying cabling.

In short, HD analog cameras are budget-friendly and easier to set up, while IP digital cameras offer superior quality and advanced features but come with a higher price tag and complexity.
